Changes in patient access to Flash Glucose Monitors (including the FreeStyle Libre®) for diabetics in Lancashire and South Cumbria.
NHS England has now launched the national criteria for accessing Flash Glucose Monitors, such as the FreeStyle Libre®. This has been done to unify patient access to these devices across the country.
All eight Clinical Commissioning Groups in Lancashire and South Cumbria have adopted the national criteria, which replaces the main criteria identified in the relevant policy, which is the Policy for the Provision of Continuous Glucose Monitoring and Flash Glucose Monitoring.
A specialist clinician or the clinician who oversees the patient’s diabetes care still needs to determine a patient’s eligibility. When a patient satisfies the eligibility criteria, ongoing supplies of sensors can now be prescribed by GPs.
Patients should note that only the criteria for Flash Glucose Monitors has been amended; the eligibility criteria for Continuous Glucose Monitoring remains unchanged.
