Patients asked to have their say on Hambleton practice branch closure

People registered with Over Wyre Medical Centre have been asked to give their views on the closure of its smaller branch practice in Hambleton.

The building in Kiln Lane is in need of significant investment to bring it in line with regulations including infection control.

The branch has been temporarily closed since March to focus the practice’s services at the main premises in Wilkinson Way, Preesall, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The practice has launched a survey with patients asked to provide any issues they may face following the branch closure.

Dr Luke Holmes, one of the GP partners at Over Wyre Medical Centre, said: “We have continued to develop the main Preesall branch of the surgery in recent years, turning it into a true 21st-century modern health facility that meets the needs of all our patients.

“While we have enjoyed a long history in Hambleton, the building itself was in great need of renovation. And prior to the COVID-19 pandemic there were fewer and fewer appointments taking place there.

“We strongly believe all our patients can have their needs met adequately at the Preesall site, however if anyone does have any concerns I would encourage them to let us know by completing the survey.

“Closing the Hambleton site would also potentially allow us to expand our state-of-the-art premises in Preesall to bring even more services to the area, preventing the need for people living Over Wyre to travel to other parts of the Fylde Coast for some appointments.”

In the 12 months leading up to March 2020, only an average of 121 appointments per week were carried out in Hambleton, compared to 1,634 in Preesall. Of those 121 appointments, only 27 were with a GP, compared to 807 at Preesall.

Hambleton is 4.5miles from the surgery in Preesall and a 10-minute drive. The 2C bus goes past Over Wyre Medical Centre every hour.
