Reliving memories on board dementia heritage tram

Memories of days gone by will be celebrated this week on board a tram ride especially for local people living with dementia and their carers.

The ride, which has been organised by Trinity Hospice’s Admiral Nurse Maxine Emslie and Health Care Assistant Julie Woolley-Hemming, with support from Blackpool Transport, forms part of Blackpool’s Dementia Action Week activities and will be followed on Friday by a special garden party at the hospice’s new allotment.

Passengers will enjoy music from Thornton Cleveleys Brass Band before boarding, then recorded music from years gone by selected by Andy Mitchell before a fish and chips lunch provided by Harry Ramsdens and Blackpool Transport.

Maxine said: “Dementia Action Week is all about raising awareness of dementia and the local support available so we can create a dementia friendlier community for all.

“We’re working all week in our community to highlight the incredible work being done across the Fylde coast, supporting the launch of a new Dementia Café in Freckleton and even attending the Alzheimer’s Society Conference in London.

“But the most exciting part for this year is the incredible memory tram which we’ve been able to offer to those living with dementia in our community. We know it’ll be a wonderful experience for everyone on board, and the chance for carers to get to know one another, build a support network and enjoy reminiscing about days gone by.

“We’re really looking forward to our garden party as well for another great networking opportunity and for families to meet professionals for additional advice and support.

“We owe a huge amount of thanks to Blackpool Transport for supporting us for this year’s Dementia Action Week as well as Blackpool Council for helping with local parking for our passengers.”

The tram is fully booked, but anyone who wants to know more about the local support available around dementia is welcome to attend the garden party at the Trinity Allotment at HASSRA Sports Pavilion on Anchorsholme Lane East, Thornton.

Dementia Action Week runs from 16-22 May.
